Geography and climate in Penedés

The appellation of origin "Penedés" is located in the region of Catalonia, in northeastern Spain, and is characterized by its Mediterranean climate and the diversity of its soils, which include clay, limestone and sandy soils. This geographic and climatic diversity allows for a great variety of wines, especially the whites.

There are three main subzones in this wine region:

Alt Penedés:
- White Wines: This sub-zone is famous for its high quality white wines. The most outstanding varieties are Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada, which are the main grapes used in the production of Cava, the famous sparkling wine of the region. There are also white wines of Chardonnay and Riesling that are highly appreciated.
- Red Wines: Although whites predominate, notable Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot reds are also produced.
Central Penedés:
- White wines: In this subzone, Macabeo and Chardonnay are the most representative white varieties. The wines are usually fresh and aromatic, with good acidity.
- Red Wines: Red production includes Tempranillo and Syrah, although in smaller quantities than whites.
Baix Penedés:
- White Wines: With a more marked influence of the Mediterranean climate, this subzone produces excellent white wines of Parellada and Chardonnay. The wines tend to be fruitier and lighter bodied.
- Red wines: Garnacha and Cariñena wines stand out here, which tend to be more robust and with a greater concentration of flavors.

The Penedés is especially renowned for its Cava production, with a long tradition in the production of high quality sparkling wines. The white wines of the Penedés, with their freshness, aroma and versatility, are undoubtedly the most representative and appreciated of the region.

What are the wines of Penedés like?

Still wines from the Penedés appellation may not yet enjoy the same fame as those from other regions, but their reputation is growing rapidly as the area's wineries continue to deliver top quality. In this region, Xarel-lo, the queen variety of the Penedés, shines with a special light of its own. This grape is known for its freshness and versatility, making it an excellent base for white and sparkling wines. We will also find other varieties such as Macabeo, Parellada, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
