Introduction

This tour through Bierzo, Valdeorras and Ribeira Sacra introduces the traveler to the magic and beauty of three quality wine producing areas that are achieving on their own merits to be among the references of Spanish wine with its most renowned native varieties such as Mencia for red wines and Godello for white wines.

 

Itinerary

Day 1: D.O Bierzo

We leave Madrid for the Bierzo wine region to enjoy a day of wine tasting in three of the main wineries in the region. Discover the versatility of the Mencía grape variety and a region that, in just a few years, has become the most interesting wine region in Spain in the eyes of many internationally renowned sommeliers and winemakers. Even with a Mediterranean influence, Bierzo can be considered the red wine region with the most Atlantic profile of all those in Spain.

The first stop will be at a winery with a long family tradition and a clear commitment to organic vineyards and production. Your visit will be exclusive and will include a tour of the winery and an educational walk through the vineyard.

Time for lunch at a local restaurant specializing in rice, sausages and local cheese.

After lunch, visit a family winery in the San Lorenzo Valley that produces traditional wines from organic vineyards. Enjoy a tasting of two of their wines accompanied by a sweet petisco made with products from the DO Bierzo.

The last winery of the day will be Pittacum, located in Arganza, a village with a great winemaking tradition, immersed in a picturesque natural environment in the Berciana Region.

A short drive will take you to your overnight accommodation in the Valdeorras region.

Day 2: D.O. Valdeorras

Today you will explore Valdeorras. This region is made up of nine municipalities, all but one of which have vineyards that give the territory a unique singularity. The quality of Valdeorras wines has aroused national and international interest.

The first stop of the day will be in Godeval, where the Godello grape is the queen. Visit to the vineyard, current winery and traditional winery followed by a tasting.

The second stop will be at Alan de Val Winery. Visit the Pedrazais vineyard and winery to discover its history and commitment to the recovery of traditional varietals. Then enjoy a 3-course lunch in the beautiful dining room with panoramic views, combined with 3 wines from the winery.

The third winery will be Adega Melillas for a tasting of its award-winning wines of excellent quality. A modern winery coexists here with a millenary winery; past, present and future merge in the service of high quality wines.

Departure from Valdeorras to the town of Monforte de Lemos where we will have a night walk. The Ribeira Sacra or Ribeira Sagrada was chosen by the monks in the Middle Ages to raise their prayers to heaven. It is no coincidence that here is the largest concentration of rural Romanesque in Europe.

 

Day 3: Ribeira Sacra D.O.

After breakfast, head to Castro Caldelas, a small medieval village where we will climb up to the castle to enjoy the views of the surroundings. Continue to the Matacás viewpoint located at the edge of the canyon and enjoy one of the most impressive views of the Amandi vineyards.

It's tasting time at Adega Algueira, one of the iconic wineries of Ribeira Sacra. After a guided tour of the facilities we will enjoy a tasting of 3 wines (white, red and crianza).

Lunch with local seasonal products at Merenzao restaurant.

The afternoon begins with a catamaran ride, which offers another perspective of the grandeur of this landscape. We will discover why we talk about viticulture is heroic when referring to this area.

The last stop of the day is at the Rectoral de Amandi. A winery with a long history linked to Amandi viticulture and wines that have crossed borders. Every year this winery receives awards and its wines are annually mentioned in the best competitions and the best wine guides.

In the early afternoon we will start our return to Madrid or in your case we will take you to the nearest city to continue your trip.
